Common Makeup Application Mistake (Part 4)

Part 4 - Applying lipstick to chapped lips

Never apply lipstick to chapped lips as this may aggravate the condition. What's more, your lips will appear crusty and unnatural.

How do you treat chapped lips?
First of all, you need to exfoliate. Apply an ample amount of lip balm, petroleum jelly or Vaseline on your lips. Allow your lips to absorb the ointment for a few minutes. Then brush them gently with a toothbrush to get rid of the dead skin.

Now that you have gotten rid of the dry skin on your lips, you would want to make sure that you keep them moisturised. Here are some tips:
1. Apply lip balm before you sleep (especially so if you are sleeping in an air-conditioned room)
2. Stay hydrated! Dehydration can affect the moisture level of your lips.
3. Stop licking your lips as the constant wetting and drying of your lips causes chapped lips.
4. Make sure that the lipstick, lip balm or moisturiser you are using does not contain ingredients that your are allergic to.

So keep your lips moisturised and kiss chapped lips goodbye!

Common Makeup Application Mistake (Part 3)

Part 3 - Obvious lip liner

Ever seen a woman with obvious rings on her lips after she finishes her meal? Here's how to avoid making this terrible mistake.

Rule #1 - Lip liner should NEVER be darker than your lip colour
Wearing a dark lip liner with light lipstick is way out of date! Your lip liner should match your lipstick colour so that you won't end up with an obvious ring on your lips after your lipstick wears off.

Rule #2 - Lip lines should be softly defined
Make a thin line and softly fill in the rest of the lips with the lip liner, smudging and blending the colour on the rest of the lips so that when the lipstick wears off, you will not end up with just an outline of your lips. Then fill in the lipstick, making sure that the two blend and look even. You can use a lip brush to blend the lipstick closer to the lip liner to avoid a harsh line.

Rule #3 - Do not overdraw your lip lines
Apply the lip liner closely on the top of your natural lip line and try not to overdraw on your lips as the end result may be a harsh and unnatural looking lips.

Follow these tips and say goodbye to obvious rings on your lips!

Common Makeup Application Mistake (Part 2)

Part 2 - Obvious under eye concealer

How do you conceal your dark eye circles and to avoid reverse-raccoon eyes? The common mistake women make is choosing a concealer that is too light and over applying it.

Guide to choosing the right colour of concealer. For dark circles that are:
  • Bluish / Purplish / Grayish - Try shades of yellow, ochre or bisque
  • Brownish - Choose a light blue or mauve concealer
  • Reddish - Choose an olive-based concealer as the green tones will help diminish the redness
How to apply concealer
Apply several dots of concealer starting from the inner corner under the eyes. Using your ring finger, gently pat (never rub!) the concealer and blend to cover the entire dark circles. Concentrate on the edges of your application as well for a more natural blending with the skin tone and foundation. An alternative is to use a concealer brush which enables precise application. Remember to start with less than what you think you need - you can add more if needed. But the idea is to use as little concealer as possible. To set the concealer, dust with loose powder over your face as well as under your eyes.

Concealer or foundation first?
There is no hard and fast rule as to whether you should apply concealer or foundation first. Generally, it is the foundation applied first, followed by the concealer. By applying the foundation first, you can see where you need more coverage and apply concealer accordingly. However, if you do it the other way round, you might wipe the concealer off when applying your foundation.

You can also use these steps to cover up other marks on your face like blemishes, freckles, pimple marks and scars.

I hope you find these tips useful!

Common Makeup Application Mistake (Part 1)

Part 1 - Incorrect shade of foundation

The common mistake made is to wear a shade that is either too light or too dark. Regardless of the foundation formula (liquid, cream or powder), choosing the right shade is crucial to achieving a flawless look. But with an endless selection of shades to choose from, how then do you select the best shade for your skin tone?

What to note when selecting the right shade of foundation:
  • The perfect shade of foundation should be identical with your skin tone.
  • Test the foundation in natural lighting.
  • Apply along the jaw line and blend it gently into your skin. It should match your skin tone and completely disappear.

Looking Good During Pregnancy

Worried that your pregnancy will cause you to "lose your looks"? Fret not! Here are some tips to looking fabulous during pregnancy.

Hormone changes during pregnancy can cause changes in your complexion and this is when you should consider adjusting the types of cosmetics you use. If you are experiencing acne or oily skin, you may want to switch to noncomedogenic, oil-free moisturizers and foundation. If you are experiencing chloasma (also called "mask of pregnancy"), this can be tackled easily with foundation or concealer to even out the blotchiness and uneven skin tones.

Keep your makeup routine simple! During your pregnancy, you are likely to be feeling very tired and you probably won't want to get out of bed early to put on your makeup. Furthermore, your makeup application time will be seriously compromised once you have a baby to take care of. If you are not used to going out with makeup, try to bring down to the basics - foundation, mascara, blusher and lipstick/lip gloss.

Do also note that during pregnancy your skin may be more sensitive. So choose products wisely by watching out for the ingredients in your makeup.

Remember, you still can look gorgeous when you are pregnant! :)

It's Summer Time! How To Keep Your Makeup Fresh?

It's summer and the hot sun and humidity can cause your makeup to run and smear, leaving you with a not-so-glamourous look. Here are some tips to keeping your makeup fresh.

Face
Skip foundation if you could and opt for a tinted moisturiser. But if you need more coverage, prep your skin first with a primer which will help keep foundation, concealer, blush and powder on longer. Choose liquid-based foundation rather than an oil-based one for a smoother look. Then set your foundation with loose powder.

Eye & Lip
When it comes to eye and lip makeup, keep it light. Try using matte powder eyeshadow or a cream-to-powder eyeshadow. Avoid cream eyeshadows, since they show creasing and smear easily. With summer's high humidity, you will need waterproof mascara and waterproof eyeliner to prevent smudges throughout the day. Go easy on the lips colours. Instead of using a thick lipstick, go for tinted lip balm with SPF. It gives your lips the right glow, and protects them from the sun too.

Remember, summer is a time to keep everything fresh and light, right from your attire to your makeup. So try out these tips and have fun this summer!

Protection Against UVA And UVB Rays

Wearing sunscreen can help protect our skin from the harsh Ultra Violet rays of the sun (these rays are known as UV rays). The sun radiates UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. Most UVC rays are absorbed by the ozone layer and does not reach the earth. However, both UVA and UVB rays penetrates the atmosphere and causes conditions like premature skin aging, eye damage and skin cancers.

UVA rays play a major part in skin aging and wrinkling whereas UVB rays causes skin reddening and sunburn. A sunscreen that offers UVA protection will have a "PA" rating, while those with UVB protection will have an "SPF" rating.

The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating indicates the degree of sunburn protection provided by sunscreens. For instance, if you usually normally develop a sunburn in 10 minutes without wearing a sunscreen, a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 will protect you for 150 minutes (10 minutes multiplied by the SPF of 15).

Choosing the right sunscreen
When choosing the right sunscreen, do consider how much time you are really out in the sun and do keep in mind how fair your skin is. If you are very fair skinned and tend to have freckles easily, then you will probably want a sunscreen with a higher SPF rating as compared to someone who has a darker skin tone. Also, look for a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection.

Proper use of sunscreen
1. Apply sunscreen before you are exposed to the sun. It takes 20-30 minutes for sunscreen to be absorbed by the skin, so it should be applied at least 30 minutes before going out into the sun.
2. Apply generously and cover all the bases including your ears, neck, shoulders and the back of your neck to ensure complete coverage.
3. Reapply sunscreen after swimming, perspiring or after using the towel.

How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

When it comes to makeup, it is important to keep your tools and makeup brushes clean. Foam eyeshadow applicators, sponge wedges, powder puffs and brushes gets contaminated with skin oils, dirt, bacteria and makeup residue that can cause breakouts. Keeping them clean can reduce the likelihood of you experiencing such problems.

How to clean your tools and makeup brushes
There are specially-made makeup brush cleansers, but a facial cleanser or shampoo will do the trick just as well.
  • First, run your brushes under warm, running water to rinse off any loose makeup.
  • Apply a small amount of facial cleanser or shampoo and gently rub the bristles of the brush to get all the dirt out. Rinse and reapply cleanser/shampoo as needed until the water runs clear.
  • Gently pat dry and reshape your brushes and let them air-dry naturally to preserve their smoothness.
How often you clean your tools and brushes depends on the frequency in which you use them. It is recommended to clean them at least once a week or as needed.

So if you have not cleaned your brushes within the past 2 weeks, then they are in desperate need of a bath! =)
